前回の欧州出張中に偶然立ち寄った本屋で VITRUVIIの『DE ARCHITECTURA LIBRI DECEM』（建築十全）のラテン語　ドイツ語対訳本を入手することができた。VITRUV自身についてはあまり知られていないが、ローマ皇帝 AUGUSTUSに仕えたVITRUVは、この本を皇帝に捧げており、その格調高い導入部分は、２０００年の時空を超えて現代において読者に新鮮な感動と喜びを伝えるものである。この本は紀元前３３年から２２年ごろにかけて書かれたと思われるが、以来古代ヨーロッパ社会における建築に関する古典的名著として、幾多の建築家、建築従事者、知識人、聖職者に（密かに）読み継がれてきたことは、引用のされかたからも窺い知れる。先に話題になっているダビンチが２５歳ごろにはこの本の印刷版がイタリアで出ており、ダビンチの死後ではあるが、その後ローマにおいて１５４２年にはVITRUVの研究と彼の著作の忠実な再興を目的としたACCADEMIA DELLA VIRTUが結成された。キリスト教以前の本に接することで、本当に清々しい気分になる。私はラテン語をスラスラとは解さず、意味はドイツ語対訳を通じて理解しているが、二ページ見開きで左にラテン語、右にドイツ語の対訳という形式になっており、ドイツ語で対訳を読んだ後に、ラテン語にも目を通すようにしている。ラテン語を静かにつぶやきながら復唱することで、頭の中が洗われる、清々しい気持ちになり、数年前に南イタリアのサレルノにある古代ギリシャ遺跡PAESTUMの神殿の面影が、頭の中に蘇るのである。そして、欧州を旅し、行く先々で接し目にする物を言わぬ石造建築に、古代から脈々と伝えられる叡智の具体的表出を感じ、えもいわれぬ畏怖と親しみを感じる次第である。
